Pennsylvania (Britain Today News) June 24, 2026 — A member of the cultlike group known as the Zizians has been charged with murdering her own parents in their Pennsylvania home, more than three years after the couple was found shot dead on New Year’s Eve. Michelle Zajko, who has denied any involvement in the killings, now faces murder, burglary and conspiracy charges over the deaths of Rita and Richard Zajko.

Who Announced the Charges, and What Did They Say?

Delaware County District Attorney Tanner Rouse confirmed the charges at a news conference on Wednesday. He said Zajko had been charged with murder, burglary and conspiracy in connection with her parents’ deaths, and stressed that investigators believe she did not act alone.

Rouse said Zajko was implicated in the killings

“to the extent that if she wasn’t the one who actually pulled the trigger, she was certainly aligned with those who did.”

What Happened to Rita and Richard Zajko?

Richard and Rita Zajko were shot to death inside their home in Chester Heights on New Year’s Eve, 2022. According to Rouse, a neighbour’s doorbell camera captured footage of a car pulling up outside the property shortly before the killings, along with a voice shouting “Mom!” and another exclaiming, “Oh my God! Oh, God, God!”

Describing the moments after the car’s arrival, Rouse said:

“The lights go on in the home, and Richard and Rita Zajko are executed.”

Had Michelle Zajko Been Estranged From Her Parents?

Rouse told reporters that Zajko had been estranged from her parents in the year before their deaths. He said the killings came just hours after Rita Zajko had reached out to her daughter in an apparent effort to mend their relationship.

“Her mother reached out and explained that she was sorry for the rift that had grown between them,”

Rouse said.

“That text went unanswered.”

A few hours later, at least two people entered the home, according to Rouse.

What Has Michelle Zajko Said in Her Own Defence?

Zajko has repeatedly denied any role in her parents’ deaths. In court filings, she has suggested an alternative explanation: that her father may have killed her mother before killing himself.

In an “Open Letter to the World” published in April 2025, Zajko wrote:

“I didn’t murder my parents.”

As of Wednesday, online court records did not indicate whether Zajko has retained an attorney to represent her in the Pennsylvania case. An attorney who has represented her in a separate Maryland case did not immediately respond to a request for comment, and the Delaware County Public Defender’s office declined to comment.

Where Is Michelle Zajko Being Held Now?

Zajko has been jailed in Maryland since February 2025 on unrelated charges. She was arrested there alongside two other people linked to the group, Daniel Blank and Jack “Ziz” LaSota, whom authorities describe as the group’s leader.

The arrests followed a landowner’s complaint about people parked in box trucks on his property. Responding police described the group as having “ties with the Zizians Cult” and said they would be questioned about crimes committed across the country.

What Charges Does Michelle Zajko Face in Maryland?

All three — Zajko, Blank and LaSota — face state charges in Maryland of trespassing and illegal possession of guns and drugs. LaSota additionally faces a federal charge of illegal gun possession by a fugitive. A judge has recently granted a defence request for a competency evaluation in that federal case.

Is Michelle Zajko Connected to a Border Patrol Agent’s Death?

Separately, Zajko is charged with supplying the firearm used to kill US Border Patrol Agent David Maland during a shootout in Vermont in January 2025. The same shootout left another member of the group dead.

Does Jack “Ziz” LaSota Accept the “Zizian” Label?

According to court filings, LaSota’s attorneys say their client rejects the term “Zizian” altogether and denies that LaSota and associates have formed a cult.

Zajko herself has alleged that authorities arrested the group in Maryland specifically to stop them from helping exonerate Teresa Youngblut, another group member who has pleaded not guilty to murder in Vermont and could face the death penalty if convicted.

Was Michelle Zajko Questioned Before These Charges Were Filed?

Zajko was living in Vermont at the time her parents were killed and was questioned by police there shortly afterwards. Weeks later, officers briefly detained her at a Pennsylvania hotel but released her without charge. LaSota, who was staying at the same hotel, was charged at the time with obstructing the homicide investigation and disorderly conduct.

What Is the Zizians Group, and What Other Deaths Is It Linked To?

Authorities have long regarded Zajko as a person of interest in her parents’ deaths — two of six deaths now linked to the group since 2022. The Zizians are described by investigators as a loose network of young, highly intelligent computer scientists who share radical views on veganism, animal rights, gender identity and artificial intelligence.

Besides the Zajko killings and the Vermont shootout, the group has also been tied to the death of one of its own members during an attack on a California landlord, and the landlord’s subsequent killing.

What Happens Next in the Case?

With murder, burglary and conspiracy charges now filed in Pennsylvania, Zajko faces prosecution in Delaware County while remaining in custody in Maryland on the separate trespassing and weapons charges. It remains unclear when she will be transferred to face the new charges or when a plea will be entered.
