What is Skin Cancer?

If you suspect that you might have skin cancer, it’s important to get it checked by a doctor. The doctor will examine the lesions, and symptoms, as well as any suspicious growths. They may even perform a biopsy to determine if you have the disease. Symptoms and treatment depend on the type of skin cancer you have.

In general, skin cancer develops when the skin cells multiply uncontrollably. This can happen when the UV rays from the sun damage to the skin cells. When the cells multiply too quickly, they become malignant and spread to other parts of the body. Fortunately, skin cancer can be treated successfully when caught in its early stages.

The two most common types of skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Basal cell cancer is the most common type and develops in areas exposed to the sun most often. Melanoma is a type of skin cancer that develops from the cells that give your skin color, called melanocytes. Melanoma can develop anywhere on the body but is usually found on the back and chest of men and the legs of women.

Most people do not experience any symptoms of skin cancer until it has spread. Although skin cancer usually occurs on exposed areas, it can also occur in less-exposed areas. Some of these areas include the soles of the feet and under fingernails. In rare cases, skin cancer may even develop in the genital area.
