One dead as volcano erupts in Italy sending tourists fleeing for their lives

A hiker has died after a volcano erupted on the island of Stromboli in Italy.

Video clips shared online showed thick smoke billowing into the sky as locals and tourists ran from the beaches on Wednesday.

National Geographic has described the volcanos explosions as being constant but mild since 1932.

Many tourists also fled their hotels after hearing a load roar when the volcano first erupted.

Another person was injured in the explosion, firefighters from the area confirmed.

Michela Favorito, who works in a hotel on the island, told Reuters: We plugged our ears and after this a cloud of ash swept over us.

The whole sky is full of ash, a fairly large cloud.

Alana Elliot, 31, was holidaying on the island of Salina, 33 miles away and was told to move away from the beach after seeing the smoke.

She said: We were on the beach sunbathing on an air mattresses having alcohol spritz.

Then we heard a really loud boom as though thunder and lightning had struck right next to us and saw people running along the beach.
