Human leg found in river confirmed to belong to missing Marie Scott

A human leg discovered in a river has been confirmed to be the limb of a woman who went missing a year ago.

Police were called to reports that human remains had been spotted in the River Irwell near Whit Lane, Pendleton, Salford, shortly before 9am on Wednesday, November 28.

Following DNA testing, police have now confirmed the leg belonged to Marie Scott, who was reported missing from her home in Hale on December 18 last year.

Mum-of-two Marie, 58, hadn't been seen since she walked out of the family home in Hale , near Altrincham in Trafford, just before last Christmas.The remains were found in the River at the end of last month when they were spotted by a passer-by who raised the alarm. Specialist underwater teams spent hours combing an area of the river near the Jubilee Bridge, off Britannia Street. And following forensic examination it was found to be a human leg, GMP said today. DNA testing has confirmed that the leg belongs to Marie , who was reported missing from her home in Hale on Monday 18 December 2017.

Greater Manchester Police said there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances and no one else is thought to be involved in her disappearance.

Her family has been informed and inquiries into the circumstances of her disappearance are continuing.

Detective Inspector Simon Akker, of GMPs Trafford Borough, said: This is an absolutely heartbreaking development in the investigation to find Marie, and her family are understandably distraught by the news.

In a week?s time Jim Scott will mark his 41st wedding anniversary, alone. His wife Marie walked out of their home, in Altrincham, Manchester, just before Christmas and has not been seen since. Police have trawled CCTV and waterways in search of the mum-of-two, but to no avail. Now, two months after she first went missing, Jim and his sons Stuart and James have spoken of their desperation to see Marie return home safe.

Having been personally involved in the search to find Marie and met with her family on a number of occasions, I know the devastating impact this will have on them.
