Gang who stole luxury cars in £2m crime spree jailed for 71 years

A violent criminal gang who stole high performance sports cars, jewellery and puppies has been jailed for a total of 71 years.

The balaclava-wearing gangsters, all of whom were from the travelling community, committed more than 200 burglaries between February and December last year in the south east of England.

The group would break into businesses or homes in broad daylight and stole £2 million worth of firearms, cash, jewellery and expensive cars such as BMWs and Audis.

They would then change the number plates of the vehicles and either dispose of them through contacts or use them to commit more crime.

Last year, in one attempted robberyat a Co-op in Burwell, Cambridgshire, a gang member drove a stolen red Audi TTRS through a railway crossing at Lakenheath, Suffolk in a bid to escape police.

When the car was later recovered at a travellers site, officers found stolen possessions from eight separate burglaries, including seven stolen puppies.

But some of the vehicles commandeered by the group are still yet to be found.

It is likely they could have been disposed of through a chop shop premises, where they were dismantled for sale and export.

ATMs were also among the gangs targets, although most of their raids were on peoples homes.

Norfolk suffered 100 of the burglaries, while others took place in Cambridgeshire, Suffolk, Essex and Bedfordshire.

The gang of thieves were sentenced in Norwich Crown Court on December 6, with Judge Stephen Holt, describing the conspiracy as the most serious he had ever encountered.

Nine of the gang had previously pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit burglary.

A tenth man, Simon Oakley, 45, of Hempnall, Norfolk was found guilty of conspiracy to burgle in October and was jailed for nine years.

These sentences reflect the scale and impact of this gangs offending, said DI Craig Harrison.

Every one of their crimes had a victim so the trauma and devastation caused in quite a short space of time was immense.

They clearly had no care at all for the impact their offending was having on communities, particularly in south and east Cambridgeshire, which were particularly badly hit, and, indeed, across the region.

Two other men, James Pateman, 55, of no fixed abode, and Thomas Brown, 54, of Cambridge, were also found guilty of handling stolen goods in October following a trial at Norwich Crown Court.

The court heard the men were involved in the disposal of jewellery between March and November last year.

Pateman was jailed for three-and-a-half years, and Brown for eight years.
