Police are investigating after a viral video emerged apparently of a Syrian refugee being viciously attacked by another pupil.

Officers are treating the incident in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, as a racially aggravated assault.

The victim is seen walking across a field when a fellow pupil appears to shove him to the ground and squirt water in his face as crowds of schoolchildren look on.

The disturbing footage shows the victim eventually get up and walk away, as the attacker is heard continuing to verbally abuse him.

Sky News has taken the decision not to show the video.

West Yorkshire Police were made aware of the incident a month ago, but the footage has just emerged and has been shared thousands of times.

"Police are investigating following a report of a racially aggravated assault of a 15-year-old male. the incident was reported to police on 25 October at around 1pm," West Yorkshire Police said.

"The male victim was walking across some fields, when he was approached by a 16-year-old male who grabbed him and pushed him to the floor."

The force said the incident is being treated as a racially aggravated assault and inquires are ongoing.

The pupils reportedly attend Almondbury Community School in Huddersfield.

Headteacher Trevor Bowen said: "The safety and welfare of students is of paramount importance to us and this was a very serious incident.

"We are not able to comment further as we are supporting the police with their investigation but I want to be clear that we do not tolerate unacceptable behaviour of any sort in our school."
