Ray Parlour and Nigel Winterburn heaped praise on Lucas Torreira after Arsenals draw with Liverpool at the weekend.
Alexandre Lacazette cancelled out James Milners opener at the Emirates to earn the Gunners a hard-fought point.
Torreira was an influential figure in the Arsenal team and produced another assured performance in midfield.
Parlour believes Torreira, who Arsenal signed from Sampdoria in the summer, has been one of the main factors for Arsenals promising form under Unai Emery.
I think they have really missed someone like Torreira in the team, he told The Sun.
At times, Xhaka was playing as that holding midfielder which hes not really. He needs someone alongside him to help him.
He has made a big difference, you need that little bit of a shield. Hes a player that can keep it simple. He breaks things up. Kind of like that Gilberto Silva, who was very underrated.
Torreira has really impressed me. They have shipped a lot of goals in, but he has come in and had a few clean sheets now.
Winterburn, meanwhile, says Torreira is so effective for Arsenal and is just the player his former club needed to bring in over the summer.
He told Love Sport Radio: When I talk about Torreira, I say to people dont only watch when hes got the ball, take a few seconds when the ball comes through him or is in another part of the pitch, have a little glance at what hes doing.
He gets the ball, he gives it, he moves it on quickly either forward or sideways but then he anticipates that it might be coming back to him or they might lose the ball and he puts himself in the hole where he thinks the ball might arrive again.
He keeps the game very, very simple but its so effective.
I said once we signed him that if he could perform to the level wed been watching him play at, he would be a fantastic addition to the squad.
Arsenal face Sporting Lisbon in the Europa League on Thursday.
