An elderly man has died and two people are seriously injured after an incident at woods in Moray.
Police received reports that three people had allegedly been attacked at Birkenhill Woods near New Elgin at about 9am on Monday.
The three were taken to Dr Gray's Hospital in Elgin where a man and woman, both aged 70, are being treated for injuries that are serious but not believed to be life-threatening at this stage.
But an 83-year-old man has since died.
A 35-year-old man has been arrested and police appealed for information about the incident.
Detective Inspector Brian Geddes, of Police Scotland's major investigation team, said: "First and foremost, I'm sure I speak on behalf of everyone within North East Division when I say my thoughts are with the family and friends of all those affected by this tragic incident.
"I know the circumstances will understandably cause concern within the local community, particularly because incidents of this nature are so incredibly rare.
