Paul Merson believes Manchester United must go on a spending spree over the next four or five windows to catch up with Manchester City and Liverpool, beginning with a move for Borussia Dortmund wonderkid Jadon Sancho.
The Red Devils registered a strong interest in Sancho, 19, this summer and were ready to smash their transfer record for the England forward, but Dortmund refused to do business with the Premier League giants.
Earlier this month, Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc confirmed that United failed with a move for Sancho and claimed the winger had no intention of forcing through a switch to Old Trafford.
Despite their failed approach, United remain keen on Sancho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has made it clear that the youngster remains the clubs number one attacking target.
Arsenal legend Merson agrees that United should prioritise signing Sancho before scouring the market for the worlds top talent in order to make ground on rivals City and Liverpool.
Theyve fallen, theyve come a long way but when they are falling the other teams like Manchester City and Liverpool are so much better than before, its frightening, he told Sky Sports The Debate.
I think Manchester United have got to get a big meeting together. Get all the scouts from around the world, because they must have loads.
Theyve got to say for the next four or five windows, weve got to get the best players. Go and get Sancho, then go and get someone else.
Sancho has refused to rule out a move away from Dortmund at the end of the 2019/20 campaign.
I cant tell the future. I just take it game by game. I just wanna give 100 per cent for Borussia Dortmund, the teenager told Viasport.
I really want to do well with Dortmund. Obviously, I want to win titles and give everything.
